Designing With Life in Mind: A Biophilic Guide to Better Surface Material Choices

04 Feb 2026
Main Stage

Material and surface choices are critical design decisions that affect environmental performance, human health and the lived experience of space. This is especially true in the many forms of workplace. Join this session to uncover how the biophilia hypothesis and biophilic design principles can be applied as a rigorous framework for material and surface selection. Moving beyond a narrow focus on “biobased,” this session will explore finishes, textures and surfaces in relation to sensory response, durability, craftsmanship, circularity and ecological footprint. Through practical examples, attendees will learn how to specify materials that measurably support physical and mental wellbeing, align with circular economy objectives, and create spaces that feel deeply human and alive.
