Material Matters

Established in 2019, Material Matters is a platform investigating the importance of material intelligence in architecture and design. There are now over 120 'Material Matters with Grant Gibson' podcasts alongside the annual fair for architects and designers, staged as part of the London Design Festival. For 2025, the brand is set to stage an event outside the UK for the first time; as part of 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen.
For the Surface Design Show Material Matters is hosting a pop-up book store. The selection of books includes a number of titles featured on the Material Matters with Grant Gibson podcast. They look at the relationship between architecture, design and materials – investigating issues such as circularity, biophilic design, and the importance of reuse. Some tell personal tales, while others – such as Show Me The Bodies: How we let Grenfell happen – recount stories that have affected thousands of lives. They all illustrate the power of materials.
