A conversation with the Supreme Award Winner from Surface Design Awards 2024

tarang

What inspired the design of TARANG?

TARANG (It is a Sanskrit word that Translates to “WAVES” in English) Presently the largest terracotta Brick tile arched vault structure in India one of its kind: without beams, reinforcement & any shuttering system.

Tarang was conceptualized as a versatile and adaptive Pavilion space. Its purpose is to serve as an immersive exhibition platform, for art & culture.Tarang's design responds to the SOUTH WEST context of the site in response to the hot and arid climate of the Western region in India. TARANG, was born from boundless inspirational client trust, granting us creative freedom. The architect sought to create a structure that not only looks beautiful but also reflects their values and beliefs. Without structural constraints, our minds flowed like waves of thought, shaping a dynamic ethos, where ideas evolve. Conceptual sketches and design development had a purpose, keeping in mind the sun path, air and ventilation, trying to bring nature in, Tarang was conceptualized as a dynamic gallery space, interaction for art & culture meticulously designed to adapt & evolve.

What aspects of the design do you think works the most?

The key here is the use of a single material local terracotta bricks and completing it in just 90 days.

"The most effective aspects of TARANG's design are its integration of traditional materials with modern construction techniques and its deep connection to the local environment. The use of local terracotta bricks in a large arched vault, constructed without beams or reinforcement, highlights both the structural innovation and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship. The design also thoughtfully responds to the hot and arid climate of the region, ensuring the space remains comfortable while minimizing environmental impact. Additionally, the wave-like forms of the structure create a visually engaging experience, where the play of light and shadow enhances the interior atmosphere. These elements together make TARANG a noteworthy example of sustainable, culturally rooted design that resonates with its surroundings."

This response focuses on the specific design elements that contribute most to the success of TARANG, emphasizing both innovation and environmental responsiveness. it serves as a model for environmentally conscious architecture that celebrates culture & contributes to the community. By sourcing materials with low embodied energy, the project strives to reduce its ecological impact thus supporting skilled local artisans & promoting sustainable materials benefiting the local economy & culture.

How do you feel to be selected as Supreme Winner for the Surface Designer Awards 2024?

"We are deeply humbled and honored to have TARANG recognized as the Supreme Winner at the Surface Design Awards 2024. This award is not just a recognition of our work but a celebration of the collective effort of everyone involved—from the artisans who brought our vision to life to the community that supported us, making India Gujarat Proud. It’s an affirmation of our commitment to sustainable and culturally resonant design, and we are filled with gratitude for this prestigious honour."

How does TARANG have an edge against the other SDA24 winners for it to be awarded Supreme?

"TARANG’s edge comes from its capacity to redefine traditional construction methods while addressing modern-day challenges. Unlike many projects that rely on modern technologies, TARANG was built without beams or conventional reinforcement, showcasing a mastery of ancestral techniques that have been adapted to create something entirely new. Its construction in just 90 days using a single material—locally sourced terracotta bricks—demonstrates not only speed and efficiency but also a deep respect for sustainability and local craftsmanship. The project’s focus on creating a space that is not just a building but a living, breathing environment that interacts with light, air, and the community, makes it a truly holistic piece of architecture. This harmonious integration of old and new, combined with the narrative of cultural continuity This multifaceted approach, combining technical innovation, cultural resonance, environmental sensitivity and a deep respect for mother earth, set TARANG apart as the “Supreme Winner."
