An interview with Lincrusta

Your wall coverings are made from natural ingredients in the UK? Please can you outline the materials that you use?
Lincrusta is still produced in our factory in Morecambe using the same time-honoured traditions as when it was invented in 1877. It is primarily made from linseed oil gel and 3 other natural ingredients that combine to form a putty like material that is then embossed with hand-engraved rollers onto FSC accredited paper.
For transparency we are always happy to provide a DOP to architects and designers specifying Lincrusta, which lists the raw ingredients.
Your product is made from linseed, where do you source this to reduce your environmental impact?
The linseed gel is from a UK source, with linseeds harvested in Belgium.
All ingredients are sourced in the UK and Northern Europe.
You are on a path to be carbon neutral by 2050, what kind of changes will you be making to achieve this?
We are committed to be carbon neutral by 2050. This is however a work in progress, we recognise that we have some way to go. We are working through our next steps now and targets now.
Our sustainable properties are as follows:
- Lincrusta is made purely from natural ingredients – the primary ingredient being linseed oil.
- We are preserving heritage craft processes – our wallcoverings are made using the time-honoured techniques that date back to 1877.
- Lincrusta is long-lasting the antithesis to the modern throw away culture.
- Lincrusta can be re-imagined. If you get bored of the colour, you can just paint over it.
- Restoration, if historic Lincrusta is found in a property, and we no longer have that pattern in the range, we can recreate panels of the historic pattern using our restoration kit.
- We chose local suppliers where available. The furthest any of our specialist ingredients come from is Northern Europe.
- We are FSC accredited.
- All of our packaging is made from 30% recycled materials and can be recycled.
- We have put new systems in place for waste management, monitoring energy efficiency.
- Our whole team endeavours to continually improve and monitor environmental performance and impacts
How many on screen projects have your products featured in so far?
Due to its light reflecting qualities and the ability to paint it whatever colour you chose, and to embellish with decorative effects Lincrusta is loved by movie and TV makers. The list is diverse and endless, in film Lincrusta can be found in Sherlock Holmes, Love Actually, Paddington 3, Thor and in TV they feature in Bridgerton Series 1 & 3 & Stranger Things to name a few.
Why are events like London Design Week and Surface Design Show so important?
When you work with tactile materials to create spaces with emotional connections, it is important to be able to see and touch physical samples. For this reason, we love to run sample painting workshops, to give designers a truly immersive experience that allows them to get better acquainted with our unique wallcovering to see its versatility and understand the limitless options it offers them to create bespoke textural surfaces.
These events bring the design community together. They are fantastic places to catch up with industry friends and discover emerging trends and new products. This industry is made up of so many talented and passionate people and the shows have become a forum for creative discussions that inspire all.
