Ketley’s innovations in clay at the Surface Design Show!
Ketley Brick will showcase their latest Vision Bricks, inspirational contemporary designs that combine centuries-old clay craftsmanship with the latest advances in 3D imaging, etching, and mould and die technology.
The company has harnessed the potential of one of the world’s oldest natural building materials, capturing the raw beauty of its organic clay colours whilst creating clay brick products in almost limitless shapes, sizes and textures.
Manufactured to ‘Class A’ engineering brick standards of durability, all Ketley Vision Bricks offer exceptional durability and long-term performance for modern applications.
Pioneering Brixel System
On show for the first time is Ketley’s unique 4K Brixel system, capable of delivering detailed, bold facades with an almost infinite variety of patterns, commemorative designs, and intricate brickwork images, using six Brixel brick types. A Brixel imaging tool produces detailed 3D models, enabling architects and designers to preview their designs.
Recent installations, such as the 2.5m2 Birmingham Bull at the EH Smith Design Centre in Digbeth, demonstrate how this system creates the illusion of depth and texture through the interplay of light and shadow across its surface.
New laser-etched surface designs
Using advanced laser technology, Ketley can etch designs onto the surfaces of their kiln-fired clay bricks, slips, and quarry tiles. This technology can produce virtually any pattern or image, from classic Victorian and Art Nouveau designs to intricate company logos. The fired clay's strength and durability ensure that the crisp surface detailing remains a permanent feature, resistant to erosion.
New wet-etched clay designs
Ketley’s newly developed wet-etching process produces surface designs with deeper engravings that reveal the clay’s natural warmth and mineral character. The wet-etched clay’s granular texture has a softer, rustic appearance, making it ideal for traditional and heritage design schemes.
Bespoke pressed and extruded designs
Ketley has refined its brick extrusion and pressing technology to produce special bricks in bespoke shapes or with embossed patterns, in both large and small volumes. These can be combined to create sculptural façades, flowing curves, and distinctive surface reliefs, giving projects a strong architectural identity. The new Silvertown Tunnel Portal buildings, designed by dRMM Architects and shortlisted in the 2026 Surface Design Awards for Public Realm, are a great example.
Richard Dyer, Commercial Director at Ketley Brick, said: “Bridging the gap between history, tradition and cutting-edge modernity has been the focus of our research and development, enabling us to lead the way in delivering bespoke clay solutions for architects working on challenging design briefs.”
Highlights of Ketley’s innovative Vision Bricks will be on display on stand 135, alongside its established ranges of rectangular bricks, Roman-style Linium Bricks, pavers, and quarry tiles.
