Sustainable Spotlight: An Interview with @daifein about her Colourful Bio-Plastics and their future uses.

What is the materials composition?
These pieces are made from a bio-based material using gelatin, glycerin, and natural additives. Think of it as a cross between Jell-O and leather — except it’s not for eating and it’s far more durable.
How did you create the concept for this product?
I’ve always loved the idea of materials that look almost edible but are made for fashion. The concept came from merging my background in design with biomaterials research — kind of like a kitchen-meets-lab experiment.
How long did it take you to decipher how to make this material? Was there a lot of trial and error?
A lot. It took months of adjusting ratios, drying times, and finishes. Some batches cracked, others melted in humidity — but every “failed” batch taught me how to make the next one stronger.
What is the lifespan of this product?
If stored away from moisture and direct sunlight, it can last for years without changing much. It’s not eternal like plastic, but that’s the point — it’s designed to return to nature eventually.
Where do you source your materials?
I get my gelatin from local culinary suppliers, glycerin from soap-making stores, and colorants from both food-safe and plant-based sources.
What uses does this material currently have?
Right now, it’s perfect for accessories, embellishments, and experimental art pieces. It’s lightweight, holds color beautifully, and can mimic textures from smooth to fabric-like.
What uses do you see for this material in the future?
With more research, it could be scaled for temporary fashion lines, biodegradable packaging, or even interior design accents — anywhere we need beauty without long-term waste.
What measures do you take to ensure it’s environmentally conscious?
I only make small batches, use biodegradable ingredients, and repurpose every scrap into smaller designs. Even the “ugly” pieces get a second life instead of going in the trash.
Why is sharing this work important?
For me, making these pieces isn’t just about the end product — it’s about sparking curiosity. I share my process openly so other makers, artists, and curious minds can learn, experiment, and even improve on it. The more we share ideas, the faster we can build a creative community that designs with both beauty and the planet in mind.
