Surface Spotlight Live: Shaping Communities

Located right in the centre of the Show, our Surface Spotlight Live (SSL) corridor remains one of the highlights of every visitor’s trip to the exhibition.
Featuring innovative and tactile materials for our visitors to touch and feel, SSL gives a truly ‘hands-on’ experience for architects and designers to enjoy and learn from.

Our theme for Surface Spotlight Live, ‘Shaping Communities’, will explore our ambition to improve our surroundings for all through collaboration to create meaningful design solutions.
Four elements will make up Surface Spotlight Live 2023:
1. Common Ground - Exploring processes and applications that balance aesthetics with
sustainability so that we can live in harmony with our environment.
2. Let’s Talk Tactility - Nature inspired pattern and texture create emotional connections
through our sense of touch, enhanced by the interaction of light.
3. Shared Experiences - Interactive and customisable designs spark new conversations
and celebrate the power of collaboration through materials.
4. Collective Thinking - A conceptual approach sees post-consumer waste stay out of
landfill, with materials combined into new colourful offerings.

Curated by trend and colour expert Sally Angharad, the Surface Spotlight Live table will focus on the advanced properties and uses different materials have to offer.
SSL will present a selection of surfaces, finishes and materials that celebrate the power of creative thinking, showing how ethical innovation is providing positive design solutions.

Stone Tapestry
Stone Tapestry is an explorative natural stone showcase designed by Squire & Partners in collaboration with Stone Federation which will feature in the Stone Gallery at Surface Design Show 2023. In line with the show’s theme of ‘shaping communities’, Stone Tapestry has focused on exploring some of the natural stones that have helped shape and create towns and cities across the UK and Europe. The design of the installation will give visitors a unique opportunity to explore the materials and inspire them to utilise the sustainable and aesthetic benefits of using natural stone.
Creative agency, Colour Hive will return with a dedicated materials installation featuring one-of-a-kind inspirational objects and materials.
Materials Edit will be inspired by their 2024 design story Provenance.
Provenance and authenticity are driving a flourishing interest in craft, and slow process. While this is, at heart, a story about making, it is also highly digital, looking at the role of technology in pursuit of transparency and responsible manufacture.
